Whimsy (2025)

Whimsy (2025) is a solo exhibition by Jonathan De Vries, about embracing the quaint and impulsive playfulness of the worlds unfolding around us and within us. The creations within tell stories of creatures and folks, both familiar and foreign with paintings, animation, and with sculptures of flowers and swirls. And it hopes that the fantastical wonder and curiosity inside you seep out into the people and places you go to.

Assigned male at birth, Jonathan's work often comes in the form of a small idea to fill a new medium or space, and flourishes through the continued nurturing of sketches and discussions with those in his circle, until measurements are made, storyboards are drawn and the work to bring the artwork from the page and mind to the stage and world, begins. Though each artwork often has different specific motivations, he often makes these artworks as an expression of himself and connecting that internal world of whimsy to the world of his audience.
