Unravel (解绪)

Gallery 1265 is honoured to work with Arthur Cui once again to bring you his solo exhibition, Unravel (解绪) (2025). This exhibition is inspired by the imagery of “解縻” in “Zhuangzi: Enjoyment in Untroubled Ease” - to break free from constraints and gain new possibilities. Unravel is not only a sorting out of complex emotions and chaotic thinking, but also a practice of finding the path of expression through decomposition and reorganization. In this process, the purpose of creation is not simply to pursue order, but to find the overlooked details and potential connections through continuous exploration, disassembly and reconstruction.

Arthur Yuanqiansheng Cui (he/him) is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Toronto, and a UTSC Studio Art Specialist student who have lived in Canada, China, South Korea, and United States. Through photography, painting, drawing, sculpture, and interdisciplinary forms, Cui explores the fluidity of self-identity, the tensions of cultural difference, and the re-imagining of global events through a borderless lens. His multifaceted practice delves into the intricate ways cultural and contextual environments shape individuality, uncovering the nuances of personal experience across diverse landscapes. Cui’s work challenges the viewer to confront potential social undercurrents, facilitating a dialogue between introspection and immersion, and inviting the viewer to unravel the complexities of our hyper-connected world through his unique and evocative lens.

Opened from March 31 to April 4, 2025.
