AFROTECH (2023)

Gallery 1265 presents Makena Mwenda’s AFROTECH exhibition, which will usher in Black History Month!

The AFROTECH series explores black hair and Afrofuturism through stop-motion animation. For centuries, black people have used hair as a form of cultural expression- a practice that will definetly follow us long into the future. This series demonstrates what the future of black hair could look like, and centers hair as fashion, hair as a celebration, and hair as resistance. With over 600 frames, these animations detail the nuances of black hair, using Wes Anderson's color theory and Jordan's peel-like centering of black lives.

Opened from February 1st to 10th, 2023.

Please contact Gallery 1265 for potential exhibition archival.
